Biography & Presentation Overview
Farouq A. Busari is a Doctoral Researcher and Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Rush Research Group at Auburn University's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He investigates the molecular mechanisms of iodine and halogen chemistry in biological systems. His current research focuses on engineering and characterizing human iodothyronine deiodinase enzymes, which regulate thyroid hormone metabolism, and on studying bacterial tetrabromopyrrole debrominase as a model system for understanding enzymatic dehalogenation reactions. By integrating molecular biology, protein biochemistry, mass spectrometry, computational modeling, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, his work seeks to uncover fundamental enzyme mechanisms that may inform future drug discovery and therapeutic development.
Prior to his doctoral studies, he worked as a Computational Chemist at Insilco Scientific Inventions and Development Limited (ISID) in Nigeria, contributing to computational drug discovery and design projects. His work involved molecular docking, virtual screening, pharmacokinetic prediction, and the identification of promising bioactive compounds from natural-product sources. Earlier, he served at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in Lagos, where he contributed to infectious disease research, molecular diagnostics, and laboratory investigations supporting malaria research initiatives.
Busari holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Ibadan and a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Industrial Chemistry from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Stem Innovation and Excellence (ISIE) and a member of several professional scientific organizations, including the American Chemical Society (ACS), the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS). His long-term research goal is to integrate computational and experimental approaches to accelerate the discovery of novel therapeutics and deepen our understanding of biologically important enzyme systems.
