Prof. Idowu Adewumi Taiwo

Professor Taiwo: Biographical Sketch Birth Professor Idowu Adewumi TAIWO, a native of Awe, Oyo State, was born in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, to late Deacon Samuel Adeniyi TAIWO and late Mrs. Eunice Oyedamola Morawo TAIWO. Education He started his primary school education in Baptist Day School, Ilaro, Ogun State, in 1969, and obtained his Primary School Leaving Certificate with Grade A in 1974. He attended Oranyan Grammar School, Oyo, for his secondary school education and finished his WASC examination with Grade One in 1979. Thereafter, He proceeded to the University of Lagos to obtain B.Sc. Biology degree and finished in 1984 as the best graduating student among his set. He completed his MPhil. and PhD degrees more than 20 years ago. Work Experience Professor Taiwo started his teaching career very early in 1979 with his appointment by the Ogun State Government to teach, Biology, Chemistry, and Integrated Science in Obalaju High School, Joga-Orile, Ogun State. He is now a Professor of Human Genetics and Bioinformatics in the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Lagos. Workshops, Trainee, Trainer/Resource Person Professor Taiwo has attended numerous trainings, workshops, and conferences within and outside the country. He has collaborated with several national and international organizations in organizing workshops, trainings, and conferences within and outside the country. These include Federal Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIRRO), Nigeria, the Centre for Genomics of Nutrition and Personalized Healthcare, University of Lagos, Nigeria. Cummings School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Inqaba Biotec, South Africa, Nebraska Institute of Forensics Science, USA, and European Bioinformatics Institute UK. Membership of Learned Societies Prof. Taiwo is a member of many national and international learned societies including Genetics Society of Nigeria (GSN), Nigerian Society of Experimental Biology (NISEB), Lagos University Medical Society, Genetics Society of Nigeria, Nigerian Society of Human Genetics (NSHG), African Society of Human Genetics, and Nigerian Bioinformatics and Genomics Network (NBGN). Services to the Country, the University, and Others Professor Taiwo has served the country, the university and the community in many capacities including reviewer of journals, internal and external assessor, and community leader. He has supervised 16 PhD theses and is currently supervising 4 PhD theses to hit is his target of 20 or more PhD theses being supervised in his career. He is currently the Head of Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Lagos. Family Professor Taiwo is happily married with children.
